Update: uni life

As I’ve started uni again I thought I’d fill you in a bit on what I’m doing.
If you don’t already know - I study photojournalism. In our second year we work on the uni newspaper,
Arts London News, which is published weekly. I’m the picture editor. It’s hard work. It’s stressful. It’s challenging. It’s good.
We work together with the third year journalists to produce the paper, and there are lots of different sections to it, e.g. news, features, reviews, lifestyle, sports, etc.
Usually editors from the other desks (the ones I just mentioned) would come to us with a picture request on a story they’re working on, which means they want us to get pictures to go with the story. I (+the deputy picture editor) then decide who will go out and take the photos (there are 6 photojournalists working on our team, and one videographer).
Well, there’s a bit more to it, like attending conferences where we come up with ideas and discuss new stories, a review session every week where we go through the last issue, etc.
The hardest part at the moment is time management, delegating people and getting used to how everything works.
What working on the paper as an editor does teach me is how important organisation is and keeping track of everything that’s going on.
Also I’m the type of person who wants to do a good job and get things done properly. Quite often this makes me want to do everything on my own, as I’m afraid of relying on others. But delegation is something you have to do, and it’s worth learning. It will make your life so much easier, it will release stress and in the end it will hopefully just prove that other people can do just as good a job.
This doesn’t mean you’re not in charge, it simply means that you give away work, you spread it, making life easier for everyone.

  1. I am just like you...I struggle with delegating as I hate asking for help. I also like things done just right so I usually find myself doing everything myself. Oh I so know how to stress myself out...slowly learning that help is a good thing.

    1. Yes, definitely learning it. I think once you get to a point where you just can't bear the stress anymore you will start to not worry so much anymore if others do good job... as long as the job will be done. ;)
